4.12 Workers with Family Responsibilities<br />
Objectives<br />
• To become aware of the problems workers with family responsibilities face<br />
• To think about measures to give workers with family responsibilities equal opportunities<br />

• Both men or <strong>women</strong> together or separately<br />
• All ages<br />
• All educational levels<br />
• Formal <strong>and</strong> informal sector workers<br />

• This <strong>manual</strong><br />
Exercise<br />
Step 1<br />
• Explain to the participants that you are going to tell them a story <strong>and</strong> that everyone is playing a<br />
role in that story<br />
• Assign the following roles:<br />
- Pisei<br />
- Pisei’s husb<strong>and</strong><br />
- 2 little children<br />
- Gr<strong>and</strong>mother (Pisei’s mother)<br />
- 2 neighbours<br />
- Friend of Pisei’s husb<strong>and</strong> (1 or 2)<br />
- Employer or supervisor in factory<br />
- Bus driver<br />
- Shopkeepers (2 or 3)<br />
- Colleagues from Pisei <strong>and</strong> colleagues from her husb<strong>and</strong> (rest)<br />
• The setting should be as follows:<br />
- Pisei, her husb<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> children are at one side of the room<br />
- The neighbours are next to them<br />
- The gr<strong>and</strong>mother is a bit further away<br />
- In between the neighbours <strong>and</strong> the gr<strong>and</strong>mother the shopkeepers take a place<br />
- In front of the shopkeepers there is a bus stop where the bus driver takes a seat<br />
- At the other side of the room is another bus stop in front of the factory where the employer<br />
will be <strong>and</strong> where the colleagues will take place<br />
- The friends of Pisei’s husb<strong>and</strong> are hanging around somewhere<br />
• You will tell a story about a day of Pisei <strong>and</strong> when the participants hear that the situation of<br />
Pisei is similar to their own situation, they will play their role accordingly. Let them use a bit of<br />
fantasy but don’t make it too long<br />
