Exercise<br />
Step 1<br />
• Read the following story:<br />
Chantha, born <strong>and</strong> raised in a poor family from Kompong Cham, works as a prostitute. A female<br />
relative tricked her into coming to Phnom Penh on the promise of a job in a restaurant where she<br />
could earn two to three chi (1chi=3.75 grams) of gold per month. Instead, she was locked up in a<br />
brothel in the Boding slum <strong>and</strong> forced to serve clients. For three months, she still believed she<br />
could escape, not realizing that she had been sold. When she finally dem<strong>and</strong>ed to be set free, she<br />
was told by the brothel owner that she would have to pay for her freedom <strong>and</strong> this would be very<br />
expensive. She would have to work hard <strong>and</strong> earn a lot in order to repay the sum of money given<br />
to her relative. Fearing further beatings, she obeyed the brothel owner.<br />
Step 2<br />
• Discuss the story with the group using the following questions:<br />
- What is the story about?<br />
- How can something like this happen? (Causes of trafficking)<br />
- Who do they think will sell <strong>women</strong>/girls/boys?<br />
- Who will buy the <strong>women</strong>/girls/boys?<br />
- What kind of promises will traffickers make to convince someone to come with him/her?<br />
- Who is being trafficked? (victims)<br />
- What happens with the <strong>women</strong>/girls/boys who are sold?<br />
- What can we do against it? How can we mobilize others to fight against it?<br />
- What can we do to enable victims to lead a normal life again?<br />
