along the Gisborne coast to Mahia Peninsula. It is absent from<br />
Hawke Bay but becomes increasingly abundant south <strong>of</strong><br />
The most northern record on the west coast <strong>of</strong> Wellington is the south<br />
coast: <strong>of</strong> Kapi ti I, (Hoggard).<br />
In the South Isl<strong>and</strong>;<br />
all southern isl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong><br />
the Chatham Is, D. <strong>antarctica</strong> forms a more-or-less continuous b<strong>and</strong><br />
shores subjected to strong or moderate wave force.<br />
does not occur, or is sparsely distributed on three<br />
long stretches <strong>of</strong> open coast: the North Isl<strong>and</strong> west coast<br />
between Kapiti I, <strong>and</strong> Albatross Point; (.ii) exposed places on the<br />
south side <strong>of</strong> Cook Strait, southern Westl<strong>and</strong> near Jackson<br />
The coast between I. <strong>and</strong> Albatross Point is the longest<br />
stretch <strong>of</strong> coast uninhabited by DuY'Vi in New Zeal<strong>and</strong>. Most <strong>of</strong><br />
the shore is beachi or beach <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>t<br />
mudstone boulders. There are, however, a few areas where the<br />
substratum appears to be sui table for Durvi<br />
About 15 km<br />
west <strong>of</strong> wanganui there are some stable boulder reefs, <strong>and</strong> the<br />
shore just south <strong>of</strong> , near ~w~,,~,.=, appears to be suitable<br />
habi ta t. So too are areas neax New Further north at<br />
Urenui, Pariokariwa, Tongaporutu, Awakino, Waikawau, <strong>and</strong> Gannet I.<br />
there is stable rocky shore, but<br />
grows at none <strong>of</strong> these<br />
Morton <strong>and</strong> Miller (1968:294) incorrectly assumed that<br />
DuY'Villaea grew on small isl<strong>and</strong>s near New Plymouth <strong>and</strong> at Gannet I<br />
The southern extent <strong>of</strong> the D. anta:t'ctica popUlation on the west<br />
Auckl<strong>and</strong> coast is just south <strong>of</strong> Albatross Point.<br />
Duroillaea grows<br />
on the south side <strong>of</strong> Cook<br />
Strait. Many areas that appear to be suitable habitat for the kelp<br />
are dominated by Carpophyllunl mascha<br />
There is no <strong>Durvillaea</strong><br />
Point <strong>and</strong> stevens I. A few stunted specimens <strong>of</strong><br />
both grow on The Brothers, <strong>and</strong> there is a small bed on the<br />
east side <strong>of</strong> the entrance to Channel. Li'ttle DuT'viZ grows<br />
on the rocky coast between Channel <strong>and</strong> Cloudy Bay.<br />
In southern Westl<strong>and</strong> several stable areas are devoid<br />
<strong>of</strong> Durvil Neither species grows at Jackson Head, Open I.<br />
or Arnott Head, although drift<br />
fetch up on these sh~res.
