Suhr cut up the specimen he illustrated, <strong>and</strong> distributed fx:agments<br />

to several herbaria 0<br />

Montagne (1846:38) <strong>and</strong> Areschoug (1947:271) both regarded D.<br />

mastix Suhr as a form <strong>of</strong> D. u-tilis Bory.<br />

The presence <strong>of</strong> honey-­<br />

combing in the lamina leaves no doubt that the specimen is D.<br />

<strong>antarctica</strong>.<br />

A very distinct species, vihich may readily<br />

be recognised by the fibrous root, that <strong>of</strong> D. utiZia<br />

always being scutate. The frond is <strong>of</strong> a much<br />

thinner texture (though covered with frucification)<br />

<strong>and</strong> never, even in its largest sta.te,has been<br />

found incrassated or filled with transverse<br />

inflated cel18i it <strong>of</strong>ten attains a length <strong>of</strong> six<br />

feet <strong>and</strong> lJ.p'·mrds,"<br />

1839-43 J.D.H." The nuwbers 2 <strong>and</strong> 3 are written<br />

respectively in the bottom left <strong>and</strong> right corners<br />

(Fig. 3.ld). It is a female plant with a broadly<br />

lanceolate lamina folded three times to fit the<br />

shee't. Its holdfast (largely intact) is<br />

extensively burrowed, <strong>and</strong> holey.<br />

Two i80 types have been seen: f\ EM (K) specimen<br />

(Noo 6/1094/58) annotated "DuY'villea l-Iarveyi -J.D.H.<br />

Antarctic Voyage." This incomplete specimen<br />

consists <strong>of</strong> the major part <strong>of</strong> a broB.d1y lanceolate<br />

frond folded once to fit the sheet (Fig. 3,2c).
