Abstract The benefits of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) for geochemical studies include excellent instrument sensitivity for determining a large number of elements (10 mg/kg). However, some elements suffer from interferences due to the major element content of particular rock types, and are unlikely to be quantifiable when present at low concentrations. This includes Co in carbonate rocks, and Nb in Fe-rich rock types. The concentrations of many trace metals in some CRMs are poorly constrained, and early published datasets appear to frequently overestimate the abundances of these elements. ii
