Strategic Approach<br />

A strategic national approach to <strong>ICZM</strong> is only recognizable for those<br />

countries that have been assessed as hav<strong>in</strong>g a national <strong>ICZM</strong><br />

strategy or an equivalent (Cyprus, France, Greece, Malta, Slovenia<br />

and Spa<strong>in</strong>). In these cases long-term susta<strong>in</strong>ability concerns were<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong>to the countries’ respective national strategies and<br />

broad measures to arrive at these designed. The Spanish and<br />

Maltese strategies mention the three dimensions <strong>of</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>ability, i.e.<br />

ecological, economic and social. In Cyprus and Slovenia these<br />

concepts are brought <strong>in</strong> through <strong>Coastal</strong> Area <strong>Management</strong> Projects<br />

(CAMP).<br />

Participatory Methods<br />

An adequate participation or <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>of</strong> stakeholders appears to<br />

be an overrid<strong>in</strong>g problem for most <strong>of</strong> the Mediterranean countries.<br />

Noteworthy exceptions are Malta, Slovenia and Cyprus. In the latter<br />
