Major Steps Towards Implementation <strong>of</strong> the EU <strong>ICZM</strong><br />

Recommendation - 2000-2006<br />

The overall progress <strong>in</strong> implement<strong>in</strong>g national <strong>ICZM</strong> strategies <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Baltic Sea dur<strong>in</strong>g the last six years varies considerably between<br />

member countries. Significant steps have been taken towards:<br />

• collect<strong>in</strong>g valuable <strong>in</strong>formation useful for coastal management<br />

(Denmark and Lithuania),<br />

• establishment and consolidation <strong>of</strong> appropriate adm<strong>in</strong>istrative<br />

units and related strategies (Denmark, F<strong>in</strong>land, Lithuania and<br />

Poland),<br />

• amend<strong>in</strong>g the relevant legal <strong>in</strong>struments to promote susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

development <strong>of</strong> the Baltic coastal zone (Denmark and<br />

Germany),<br />

• harmonization <strong>of</strong> laws between national and EC legislation<br />

(Latvia, Lithuania and Poland),<br />

• participation <strong>in</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> INTERREG and LIFE projects<br />

concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tegrated management and spatial plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

the coastal zone (Denmark, Estonia, F<strong>in</strong>land, Germany, Latvia,<br />

Lithuania, Poland, Sweden),<br />

• trans-sectoral network<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong>itiatives (Lithuania)<br />

and promotion <strong>of</strong> public-wide acceptance through <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

dissem<strong>in</strong>ation, and cooperation (Germany, and Poland),<br />

• water management (Latvia and Poland), and<br />

• nature protection (F<strong>in</strong>land, Latvia, Poland, and Sweden).<br />

Observ<strong>in</strong>g the Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> Good <strong>ICZM</strong><br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g section analyses to which extent the national <strong>ICZM</strong><br />

Strategies have covered the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> good <strong>ICZM</strong> (as described by<br />

the EU <strong>ICZM</strong> Recommendation). As far as possible, the analysis has<br />

been also extended to those countries where there is no formal <strong>ICZM</strong><br />

strategy and/or report, based on the <strong>in</strong>formation and statements<br />

available related to these pr<strong>in</strong>ciples.<br />
