27–30. Windbreaker, black<br />

a. Type. The windbreaker is an optional purchase item.<br />

b. Description. The black windbreaker is made <strong>of</strong> polyester <strong>and</strong> wool (65/35), in <strong>Army</strong> shade 458, <strong>and</strong> has a Velcroin<br />

liner. The <strong>of</strong>ficer windbreaker has a knit collar, cuffs, <strong>and</strong> waist. The enlisted windbreaker has a st<strong>and</strong>ard collar, knit<br />

cuffs <strong>and</strong> waist. Female windbreakers have bust darts. Females are authorized to wear the female or male windbreakers<br />

(see fig 27–17).<br />

c. How worn. All personnel may wear the windbreaker with the class B, hospital duty, <strong>and</strong> food service uniforms.<br />

Personnel will not wear the windbreaker in formations unless authorized by the comm<strong>and</strong>er. Personnel will wear the<br />

windbreaker zipped to at least the second button down from the top <strong>of</strong> the shirt. Only non-subdued, pin-on grade<br />

insignia is worn on the windbreaker. Personnel may wear the windbreaker without insignia when wearing civilian<br />

clothing.<br />

Chapter 28<br />

<strong>Wear</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Insignia</strong> <strong>and</strong> Accouterments<br />

28–1. General<br />

a. This regulation, CTA 50–900, <strong>and</strong> special authorization by HQDA specify the only items <strong>of</strong> insignia that<br />

personnel may wear on any <strong>of</strong> the U.S. <strong>Army</strong> uniforms.<br />

b. The insignia worn by military personnel designates grade, branch, organization, duty assignments, <strong>and</strong> prior <strong>Army</strong><br />

service.<br />

c. When authorized by the comm<strong>and</strong>er, members <strong>of</strong> honor guards, color guards, <strong>and</strong> similar details will wear the<br />

prescribed uniform with authorized accouterments <strong>and</strong> those accessories authorized in CTA 50–900 (see para 2–6e).<br />

d. Personnel will submit all requests for insignia designs to The Institute <strong>of</strong> Heraldry, U.S. <strong>Army</strong>, 9325 Gunston<br />

Road, Room S112, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060–5579.<br />

28–2. General description<br />

a. Material. <strong>Insignia</strong> will meet the approved military specifications <strong>and</strong> conform to proper color designation (gold,<br />

silver, or subdued). Officers may wear embroidered insignia in lieu <strong>of</strong> non-subdued metal insignia on mess <strong>and</strong> evening<br />

mess uniforms. All personnel may wear either subdued embroidered cloth insignia or subdued metal insignia on utility<br />

uniforms; they may not mix the two. Subdued embroidered insignia is on a cloth backing <strong>and</strong> will not be embroidered<br />

directly on the uniform. Personnel may not wear embroidered, sew-on subdued insignia on organizational items, unless<br />

otherwise specified in this regulation. Subdued, embroidered insignia for woodl<strong>and</strong> camouflage uniforms is black block<br />
