Pharmacology and Pain Control introduces principles<br />

of basic pharmacology as they pertain to the practice of<br />

dentistry and dental hygiene. It emphasizes actions and<br />

reactions of medications commonly used in the dental offi ce<br />

or taken by dental patients. Topics include terminology,<br />

pharmaceutical references, prescriptions and abbreviations,<br />

pharmacokinetics, drugs used in dentistry and their<br />

pharmacokinetics, drugs that may alter dental treatment and<br />

their pharmacokinetics, drugs used in dental emergencies,<br />

drug abuse, and nitrous oxide monitoring. Prerequisite: DEH<br />

DEH 2400 GENERAL AND ORAL PATHOLOGY<br />

3 cr. hrs.<br />

General and oral pathology presents the principles of general<br />

pathology in relation to diseases of the teeth, soft tissue, and<br />

supporting structures of the oral cavity, as well as general<br />

pathologic conditions affecting the head and neck. Topics<br />

include terminology and diagnostic procedures, variants of<br />

normal conditions, benign conditions of unknown cause,<br />

inflammation and repair, caries and pulpal pathology, immune<br />

response, oral diseases with immunological pathogenesis,<br />

autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, embryology of the<br />

head and neck, developmental disorders of the soft tissues<br />

and teeth, developmental cysts, neoplasia, odontogenic<br />

tumors, other tumors of oral structures, genetics, genetic<br />

syndromes and diseases of the head and neck, general<br />

pathologic conditions affecting the oral structures, TMJ<br />

disorders, and dental implants. Prerequisite: DEH 1800.<br />

DEH 2602 PERIODONTOLOGY 2 cr. hrs.<br />

This course provides information on the principles of<br />

periodontology pertinent to dental hygiene practice. Topics<br />

include tissues of the periodontium, epidemiology of<br />

periodontal diseases, classifi cation of periodontal diseases,<br />

disease prevention, disease treatment and management,<br />

drug therapy, immunology and host defense mechanisms,<br />

microorganisms associated with periodontology, surgical<br />

and nonsurgical treatment, implantology and maintenance,<br />

and periodontal/endodontic emergencies. Prerequisite: DEH<br />

1802. Corequisite: DEH 2300. (OA)<br />

DEH 2702 COMMUNITY DENTAL HEALTH 2 cr. hrs.<br />

Community Dental Health provides you with a broad<br />

understanding of the health care system, an objective view of<br />

the signifi cant social, political, psychological, and economic<br />

forces directing the system, and prepares you to promote oral<br />

health and prevent oral disease in a community by meeting<br />

specifi c dental health needs of community groups. Topics<br />

include epidemiology, community dental care assessment,<br />

community dental care provision, preventative counseling for<br />

groups, group oral health education, sociological concepts<br />

related to dentistry, biostatistics, terminology, dental care<br />

systems, and concepts of dental research. Prerequisite: DEH<br />

2602. Corequisite: DEH 2702L. (OA)<br />

DEH 2702L COMMUNITY DENTAL HEALTH LAB<br />

1 cr. hr.<br />

Community Dental Health Lab provides you with a broad<br />

understanding of the health care system, an objective view of<br />

the signifi cant social, political, psychological, and economic<br />

forces directing the system, and prepares you to promote<br />

oral health and prevent oral disease in a community by<br />

meeting specifi c dental health needs of community groups.<br />

Topics learned in lecture during the fall term (epidemiology,<br />

community dental care assessment, community dental care<br />

provision, preventative counseling for groups, group oral<br />

health education, sociological concepts related to dentistry,<br />

biostatistics, terminology, dental care systems, and concepts<br />

of dental research) are all put to practical use that culminates<br />

in a major community project. You will pick a population to<br />

assess, design an oral health program, deliver instructions,<br />

and then assess effectiveness. Prerequisite: DEH 2602.<br />

Corequisite: DEH 2702. (OA)<br />

DEH 2710 NUTRITIONAL AND DENTAL HEALTH<br />

2 cr. hrs.<br />

This course presents an overview of the organic and<br />

biochemical aspects of the 6 major nutrients in our diets:<br />

carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, water, vitamins, and minerals<br />

and their digestion, absorption, and metabolism. You will also<br />

learn how nutrients function to keep a body well, and how<br />

lack of or excess of certain nutrients can cause disease. The<br />

role of nutrition in development and maintenance throughout<br />

the lifecycle will be presented, as well as the role of nutrition<br />

and its relationship to health and disease in the oral cavity.<br />

This basic nutritional knowledge will then be incorporated<br />

into learning the skill of dietary assessment, counseling and<br />

intervention in the clinical setting. Prerequisite: DEH 1802.<br />

Corequisite: DEH 2300. (OA)<br />

DEH 2804 DENTAL HYGIENE THEORY III 2 cr. hrs.<br />

Dental Hygiene Theory III is a continuation of DEH 1802. You<br />

will apply the principles and demonstrate improved patient<br />

care skills for the prevention of oral disease, including patient<br />

assessment, treatment planning, periodontal debridement,<br />

ultrasonics, and air polishing, oral photography, oral irrigation<br />

and antimicrobial agents, topical nesthetic, hypersensitivity<br />

and desensitization, patient education involving the Internet,<br />

advanced alternate fulcruming techniques, tobacco cessation<br />

counseling, and diagnodent. This course offers didactic<br />

instruction as well as the applied techniques. Prerequisite:<br />

DEH 1802. Corequisite: DEH 2804L. Lab Fee. (OA)<br />

DEH 2804L DENTAL HYGIENE CLINIC III 4 cr. hrs.<br />

Dental Hygiene Clinic III is a continuation of DEH 1802L. You<br />

will demonstrate ability to synthesize and conceptualize all<br />

knowledge and theory skills previously learned and utilize<br />

these skills to provide direct patient services at the entry<br />

level profi ciency required of a licensed dental hygienist.<br />

Patients treated will be at a higher level of diffi culty than<br />
