oral evacuation, occupational health and safety, chemical and<br />
waste management, patient information and assessment,<br />
vital signs, oral diagnosis and treatment planning, and<br />
extrinsic stain removal. The history of dentistry and the<br />

for study casts, placing and removing a rubber dam and<br />
matrices, applying cavity liners, varnishes and bases, and<br />
placing or removing temporary restorations will be discussed.<br />

Dentistry. You will become adept at fabricating bleaching<br />
trays, night guards, custom fl uoride trays, and temporary<br />
restorations. Other activities involve placing and removing<br />
periodontal dressing, suture removal, and packing osteitis<br />

DES 0844 PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY<br />

This course introduces you to the practice of preventive<br />
dentistry. The first six weeks are devoted to the theory and<br />
practice of infection control. The remaining 10 weeks cover<br />
the philosophy of preventive dentistry and methods of plaque<br />
control: tooth brushing, interproximal aids, and disclosing<br />
solutions. Other topics include care of dental appliances,<br />
patient education, tooth deposits, stains, and discolorations.<br />
Prerequisite: Program admission. Corequisite: DES 0021.<br />

DES 1020 OROFACIAL ANATOMY 2 cr. hrs.<br />
Orofacial Anatomy is a detailed study of the gross anatomy of<br />
the head and neck and the external and internal morphology<br />
of the primary and permanent dentition. Emphasis is placed<br />
on structures directly affected by the practice of dentistry.<br />
Head and neck anatomy lecture topics include anatomic<br />
terminology, anatomic landmarks, study of skeletal,<br />
muscular, nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, lymphatic,<br />
endocrine, exocrine systems, facial spaces, and the spread<br />
of dental infections. Dental anatomy lecture topics include<br />
anatomy of the oral cavity, dental terminology, external and<br />
internal tooth anatomy, tooth nomenclature and numbering<br />
systems, individual tooth and root morphology, tooth eruption<br />
schedules, occlusion, and operative dentistry. You will<br />
use anatomical models of the head, neck, oral cavity, and<br />
teeth, and extracted teeth to apply didactic information in<br />
a laboratory setting, and apply knowledge of head, neck,<br />
and dental anatomy to clinical dental hygiene. Prerequisite:<br />
