Adult Education<br />
The Adult Education programs at SFCC provide students with<br />
a range of educational services to improve basic reading,<br />
math, and writing skills; complete a high school diploma; or<br />
improve English language communication. Students must<br />
be at least 16 years old to access these programs of study.<br />
Classes do not necessarily follow the SFCC academic<br />
calendar and are offered year-round at a variety of class sites.<br />
You may start classes at any time during the year.<br />
Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Educational<br />
Development (GED) Classes - These classes are designed<br />
to help GED students improve basic skills and to prepare<br />
for the GED exam. Course instruction covers reading<br />
comprehension, mathematics, writing, science, social studies<br />
and consumer education. You must take the Tests of Adult<br />
Basic Education (TABE) in order to register for any ABE or<br />
GED course. Once you complete the GED program, you will<br />
earn a <strong>State</strong> of <strong>Florida</strong> High School Diploma.<br />
Requirements to Earn a <strong>State</strong> of <strong>Florida</strong> High School Diploma:<br />
1. Earn scores of 11.0 or higher in the Reading, Math, and<br />
Language sections of the TABE.<br />
2. Pre-GED scores of 450 in each section and a composite<br />
score of 2300*.<br />
3. GED composite score of 2250, with a minimum score<br />
of 410 on each subtest (average score of 450).<br />
* Before proceeding to the GED exam, 16- and 17-year-old<br />
students must complete the waiver program.<br />

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) -The<br />
ESOL Program prepares you to communicate effectively in<br />
contemporary American English. The courses are designed<br />
to be interactive and include many opportunities for you<br />
to practice listening, reading, speaking and writing the<br />
English language. The curriculum also focuses on grammar,<br />
pronunciation and accent reduction, reading comprehension,<br />
vocabulary, and interactive listening skills that are applicable<br />
and transferable to daily life. Our English language<br />
immersion classrooms, in conjunction with educational<br />
activities and materials designed for adult learners, engage<br />
learners at every level and enhance the learning experience.<br />
The program includes models to enhance skills useful in<br />
workplace, life and academic applications.<br />
You will start by taking the Comprehensive Adult<br />
Student Assessment System (CASAS) assessment. It is<br />
recommended that students attain a score of six on the<br />
CASAS before advancing to the ABE or GED program, or<br />
transitioning into a college program. The Advanced ESOL<br />
class allows a seamless transition to Adult Education and/<br />
or other courses of study.<br />
A citizenship class is offered to assist you, if eligible,<br />
through the application process and prepares you for the<br />
oral and written examination in the U.S. Citizenship and<br />
Immigration Services interview. Lessons on American<br />
History, Civics, and Geography prepare you to demonstrate<br />
your knowledge of U.S. government. In addition to reading,<br />
writing, and speaking the English language, you will learn<br />
about the other requirements for citizenship.<br />
For your convenience, classes are offered year-round at<br />
a variety of locations and hours in Highlands and Hardee<br />
counties. You must be at least 16 years old to register and<br />
you may register at any time during the year.<br />
Adult High School (AHS) - The SFCC Adult High School<br />
program is open to students who have earned at least 10 high<br />
school credits and have a cumulative grade point average<br />
of 2.0 or higher. Students must earn 24 high school credits,<br />
maintain a 2.0 grade point average, and earn passing scores<br />
on required statewide, standardized end-of-course (EOC)<br />
assessments to complete the diploma requirements. Upon<br />
completion of the program, students earn a SFCC High<br />
School Diploma.<br />

SFCC Adult High School Early <strong>College</strong> Program - The<br />
Early <strong>College</strong> Program is open to students who meet the<br />
standard SFCC Adult High School requirements, but who<br />
also have a 3.0 grade point average and college placement<br />
test scores of 83 in Reading, 83 in Sentence Skills, and 77 in<br />
Elementary Algebra or equivalent scores on either the SAT or<br />
ACT. This program allows academically advanced students to<br />
earn college credit while completing a high school diploma.<br />
Fees for Adult General Education Courses - Adult<br />
Education students enrolled in the ABE, AHS, ESOL, or<br />
GED program will be charged a flat, or “block,” tuition rate<br />
per term; tuition rates for <strong>Florida</strong> residents and non-<strong>Florida</strong><br />
residents are specified in the SFCC Schedule of Classes.<br />
