ETP 0172 POLE LINE EQUIPMENT II<br />

45 con. hrs. 1.5 occ. crs.<br />

You will study blueprint reading applying to overhead line<br />

installations and be able to identify and classify oil circuit<br />

breakers, primary metering, pole mounted three phase<br />

reclosers, single and three phase transformer and capacitor<br />

banks, pole and platform mounted regulators. You will study<br />

and demonstrate profi ciencies in installing, operating and<br />

maintaining OCB’s, primary metering installations, reclosers,<br />

transformers and transformer banks, capacitor banks and<br />

regulators. You will be able to identify, operate and maintain<br />

manual and automatic controllers for OCB’s, reclosers,<br />

capacitor banks and regulators, study and be able to discuss<br />

the theory of operation, application and testing of regulators<br />

and regulator bypass switches. Prerequisites: ETP 0170 and<br />

ETP 0173 TRUCKS AND EXCAVATION EQUIPMENT<br />

45 con. hrs. 1.5 occ. crs.<br />

You will demonstrate profi ciencies in computing, planning<br />

and lifting loads; pole truck auger and winching operations;<br />

nonverbal hand signaling; winch cable maintenance and<br />

inspection and daily vehicle inspection of boom truck; bucket<br />

truck, digger truck, back hoe and trencher equipment. You<br />

will demonstrate boring equipment and aerial work platform<br />

operations. You will demonstrate maintenance of gloving<br />

bucket booms, liners and dielectric testing, and equipment<br />

trailering safety. Prerequisites: ETP 0179 and CDL License.<br />

ETP 0174 ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION STRUCTURES<br />

45 con. hrs. 1.5 occ. crs.<br />

You will apply blueprint reading and staking practices related<br />

to distribution structures and be able to identify the different<br />

types and applications of wood, concrete and steel structures.<br />

You will be able to identify a pole manufacturer and rating by<br />

reading the pole brand. You will demonstrate profi ciencies in<br />

pole erection and guying; pole and guy grounding and ground<br />

testing and will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of guys<br />

and attachments. You will be able to discuss wind loading,<br />

weight loading and modes of pole stress, typical structure<br />

failure modes and inspection procedures, basic pole framing<br />

standards and clearances, and joint utility use considerations.<br />

You will demonstrate a basic knowledge of transmission<br />

structures, framing, and clearances. Lab Fee. (OC)<br />

ETP 0175 UNDERGROUND DISTRIBUTION<br />

45 con. hrs. 1.5 occ. crs.<br />

You will study blueprints and typical layouts for URD loops<br />

and radial systems. You will be able to identify URD primary<br />

and secondary cables and their applications. You will study<br />

and be able to discuss trenching and cable installation;<br />

identify soil/cave-in conditions; discuss trenching safe work<br />

practices, discuss locating of subterranean utilities and<br />

discuss site-built and pre-cast pad installations. You will be<br />

able to identify primary and secondary risers and pothead<br />

pole framing, and be able to install porcelain, butyl rubber<br />

and tape constructed primary terminators. You will also<br />

demonstrate profi ciency installing and grounding of single<br />

and three phase pad installations; URD switch cabinet<br />

installations; secondary risers and terminations; primary<br />

and secondary cable failure modes; URD switching on live<br />

and dead front equipment; fault fi nding and testing of URD<br />

cables. Prerequisite: ETP 0178. Lab Fee. (OC)<br />

ETP 0176L ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION LAB<br />

This course provides opportunity for you to apply theories<br />

and skills. Through these experiences you will develop<br />

competence and expertise in the skills of the trade.<br />

ETP 0177 INSTALLING OVERHEAD CONDUCTORS<br />

45 con. hrs. 1.5 occ. crs.<br />

You will demonstrate proficiencies in setting up and<br />

operating wire tuggers, tensioners and wire reel tenders.<br />

You will discuss techniques for wire pulling; safe guarding<br />

of buildings, cross streets, walkways and the public during<br />

pulling operations; planning wire pulling; and identifying<br />

potential hazards that may be encountered during wire pulling<br />

operations. You will demonstrate profi ciencies in fanning<br />

and covering of energized lines and live equipment for reconductoring/pulling<br />

operations; rigging of rollers and wire<br />

pulling devices; serving of cables and ropes for pulling; care,<br />

use and insulation of insulated mechanical jumpers; sagging,<br />

transfer of, tying in and dead-ending of pulled conductors;<br />

and installing of inline and pole mounted disconnects. You<br />

will demonstrate profi ciencies in live line gloving practices.<br />

ETP 0178 BASIC ELECTRICITY FOR LINE WORK-<br />

ERS<br />

45 con. hrs. 1.5 occ. crs.<br />

This is a specialized course in basic electricity and the<br />

fundamentals of electrical power that apply particularly to<br />

the line worker. You will study the history of electricity; AC<br />

and DC circuits; the principles of induction, capacitance and<br />

reactance; portable generators and basic wiring; conductors<br />

and insulator technology and electric power. You will<br />

demonstrate profi ciencies in basic electrical formulae and<br />

measuring/metering instruments. (OC)<br />

ETP 0179 SAFE WORK PRACTICES<br />

You will demonstrate knowledge of the National Electrical<br />

Safety Code; FECA Safe Work Practices Handbook or the<br />

29) Section 1910.269 Electric Power Generation and<br />

This course is available to you, if you are participating in<br />

an indentured apprenticeship and limited to you, if you are<br />

not participating in an indentured apprenticeship. Major<br />

areas include history and development of electricity, safe<br />

use of tools and equipment, generation and transmission<br />

of electricity, electrical distribution systems, and measuring<br />
