NUR 1710C MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING FOR<br />

ADULTS AND CHILDREN I<br />

9 cr. hrs. (6 Theory / 9 Clinical-Lab)<br />

This course emphasizes the seven core concepts of the<br />

Associate Degree Nursing program introduced in the<br />

introductory course, Fundamentals of Nursing: competence,<br />

compassion, confidence, conscience, commitment,<br />

communication, and culture. Content areas are based on<br />

current NCLEX-RN® Client Needs Categories. This course<br />

builds on the foundational concepts which prepare you to<br />

apply theoretical knowledge and basic nursing skills when<br />

providing care in meeting the biopsychosocial needs of<br />

clients with common medical surgical problems. Major topics<br />

include: pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic<br />

studies, collaborative care, and nursing management of<br />

various diseases and disorders. This course includes theory,<br />

computer-assisted instruction, skills laboratory practice,<br />

simulation, clinical experiences, and standardized testing.<br />

You must earn a fi nal grade of B or higher. Prerequisites:<br />

NUR 1020C and NUR 1141C. Corequisite: NUR 1710L.<br />

NUR 2003C NURSING TRANSITION<br />

7 cr. hrs. (5 Theory / 6 Clinical-Lab)<br />

This course is designed to validate your prior learning<br />

achieved as a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse). The course<br />

focuses on transitioning from the role of the LPN to the<br />

professional RN (Registered Nurse). Emphasis is placed on<br />

critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and client care based on<br />

the foundational concepts of the associate degree curriculum:<br />

competence, compassion, confidence, conscience,<br />

commitment, communication, and culture. These concepts<br />

will be applied in both the community and clinical settings.<br />

This course includes theory, computer-assisted instruction,<br />

skills laboratory practice, simulation, clinical experiences,<br />

and standardized testing. You must earn a fi nal grade of B<br />

or higher. Corequisite: NUR 2003L. Lab Fee. (TR)<br />

NUR 2005L NURSING ASSESSMENT SKILLS LAB<br />

2 cr. hrs. (6 Clinical-Lab)<br />

This lab gives you the opportunity to learn and practice<br />

history-taking and physical examination skills. Additionally<br />

the lab course focus is on refi ning physical assessment<br />

skills, health promotion techniques, and the use of clinical<br />

assessment tools and current technologies. The course also<br />

increases your ability to accurately document assessment<br />

findings. Nursing Assessment Skills Lab reinforces the<br />

seven core concepts of the Associate Degree Nursing<br />

program: competence, compassion, confidence, conscience,<br />

commitment, communication, and culture. You must earn a<br />

NUR 2209C MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING FOR<br />

ADULTS AND CHILDREN II<br />

9 cr. hrs. (6 Theory / 9 Clinical-Lab)<br />

This course reinforces the seven core concepts of<br />

the Associate Degree Nursing program introduced in<br />

previous courses and programs: competence, compassion,<br />

confi dence, conscience, commitment, communication, and<br />

culture. The course focuses on advanced nursing skills when<br />

providing care and meeting the complex needs of clients<br />

across the lifespan. This course includes theory, computerassisted<br />

instruction, skills laboratory practice, simulation,<br />

clinical experiences, and standardized testing. You must<br />

earn a fi nal grade of B or higher. Prerequisite: NUR 2003C<br />

(Transition students only). Corequisites: NUR 2005L and<br />

NUR 2209L. Lab Fee. (TR)<br />

NUR 2403C NURSING CARE OF PARENTS AND IN-<br />

FANTS<br />

4 cr. hrs. (3 Theory / 3 Clinical-Lab)<br />

This course includes the basic nursing concepts required<br />

to care for families within the maternal – newborn hospital/<br />

community setting. You will develop an understanding<br />

of growth and developmental tasks and events, lifestyle,<br />

pathologies, and nursing problems related to the perinatal<br />

and neonatal period in a multicultural society. The concepts<br />

of ethics, rights and responsibilities, collaboration with others,<br />

and social involvement are addressed within the context of<br />

maternal-newborn care. In the laboratory and clinical setting,<br />

you are taught the knowledge and skills relevant to specifi c<br />

pathologies and nursing problems. You must earn a fi nal<br />

grade of B or higher. Prerequisites: NUR 2003C (Transition<br />

students only), NUR 2005L, and NUR 2209C. Corequisite:<br />

NUR 2500C NURSING CARE FOR COMMUNITY AND<br />

MENTAL HEALTH<br />

5 cr. hrs. (3 Theory / 6 Clinical-Lab)<br />

This course will build on previously learned mental health<br />

concepts and interpersonal skills and will emphasize<br />

the application of the nursing process in the prevention,<br />

diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of the emotionally<br />

ill individual. The framework for this course is based on the<br />

seven core concepts of the Associate Degree Program.<br />

Particular emphasis will be placed on communication skills.<br />

Primary clinical experiences will be in the dual diagnosis<br />

treatment center, a regional medical center, mental health unit<br />

and behavioral health unit. You will be involved in community<br />

health service projects through various community agencies.<br />

You must earn a fi nal grade of B or higher. Prerequisites:<br />

NUR 2003C (Transition students only), NUR 2005L, and NUR<br />

2209C. Corequisite: NUR 2500L. (TR)<br />

NUR 2802C NURSING PRACTICUM<br />

5 cr. hrs. (3 Theory / 6 Clinical-Lab)<br />

This course is a culmination of all courses in the ADN program.<br />

It allows you to transition from the role of student nurse to<br />

graduate nurse. Focus is on trends and issues to assist you<br />

to be better prepared to practice nursing in today’s world.<br />

The content includes leadership and management skills,<br />

ethical and legal responsibilities, professional growth, and<br />

preparation for licensure. The course provides experience<br />

in the clinical setting for managing and administering care<br />

to clients. You will work under the direct supervision of a<br />

Registered Nurse preceptor. Assigned faculty are available<br />

for guidance and direction to you and/or preceptor. You<br />

must earn a fi nal grade of B or higher. Completion of<br />
