1) Content Description
Provide a description of the module, as it will appear in the Module Directory and on the Student Information
System (approx. 70-80 words).
This final BDS Year 5 120 credit module will bring together all the knowledge and skills taught previously to:
Enable students to assess, diagnose and treatment plan patients with dental and orofacial conditions, as would be expected of a
primary care practitioner.
Ensure that the students have met their true potential through understanding of their responsibilities as a dental professional as
well as maintain their clinical and intellectual skills and adapt to the ever changing world of healthcare .
Ensure that the students meet the GDC standards to join the register as a 'safe beginner' and practice as an dental practitioner
Prepare the students for the Dental Foundation training programme
2) Module Aims
Specify the aims of the module, i.e. the broad educational purposes for offering this module.
BDS Year 5 aims to :
Consolidate the knowledge of a range contemporary methods of diagnostic and operative dentistry techniques, to enable them
to manage the more complex dental problems
Consolidate the skills for a dvanced contemporary restorative techniques as would be expected of a primary care practitioner
including knowledge of implants, rotary endodontic techniques and periodontal surgery.
Continue to apply the principles of an evidence-based approach to learning, clinical and professional practice and decision
making
Consolidate team work and communication skills for patients, colleagues and peers in a variety of different team situations
