1) Content Description<br />

Provide a description of the module, as it will appear in the Module Directory <strong>and</strong> on the Student Information<br />

System (approx. 70-80 words).<br />

This final BDS Year 5 120 credit module will bring together all the knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills taught previously to:<br />

Enable students to assess, diagnose <strong>and</strong> treatment plan patients with dental <strong>and</strong> orofacial conditions, as would be expected of a<br />

primary care practitioner.<br />

Ensure that the students have met their true potential through underst<strong>and</strong>ing of their responsibilities as a dental professional as<br />

well as maintain their clinical <strong>and</strong> intellectual skills <strong>and</strong> adapt to the ever changing world of healthcare .<br />

Ensure that the students meet the GDC st<strong>and</strong>ards to join the register as a 'safe beginner' <strong>and</strong> practice as an dental practitioner<br />

Prepare the students for the Dental Foundation training programme<br />

2) Module Aims<br />

Specify the aims of the module, i.e. the broad educational purposes for offering this module.<br />

BDS Year 5 aims to :<br />

Consolidate the knowledge of a range contemporary methods of diagnostic <strong>and</strong> operative dentistry techniques, to enable them<br />

to manage the more complex dental problems<br />

Consolidate the skills for a dvanced contemporary restorative techniques as would be expected of a primary care practitioner<br />

including knowledge of implants, rotary endodontic techniques <strong>and</strong> periodontal surgery.<br />

Continue to apply the principles of an evidence-based approach to learning, clinical <strong>and</strong> professional practice <strong>and</strong> decision<br />

making<br />

Consolidate team work <strong>and</strong> communication skills for patients, colleagues <strong>and</strong> peers in a variety of different team situations
