1 Structure of the programme<br />

1.1<br />

As indicated in the Programme Specification, the LLM, Postgraduate Diploma in Laws <strong>and</strong> Postgraduate<br />

Certificate in Laws consist of a number of courses. Each course is divided into four modules, with the<br />

exception of Jurisprudence <strong>and</strong> legal theory which is divided into two double modules.<br />

1.2<br />

The following terms are used to describe the structure of the programmes:<br />

A module is one quarter of a course.<br />

A double module is half of a course.<br />

A course is the equivalent of one quarter of the LLM degree.<br />

A specialisation is a grouping of related courses <strong>and</strong> their modules.<br />

1.3<br />

For each programme, a student may be examined in a set number of modules from no more than four<br />

courses, as follows:<br />

LLM - 16 modules from four courses.<br />

Postgraduate Diploma in Laws - 10 modules from a maximum of four courses.<br />

Postgraduate Certificate in Laws - five modules from a maximum of four courses.<br />

1.4<br />

Appendix A lists the courses (including the modules into which they are divided <strong>and</strong> the syllabuses) that<br />

constitute the Postgraduate Laws programme. Not all courses listed in Appendix A are available for<br />

study/examination in the current year. Appendix B lists the modules of courses available for examination in<br />

the current year. Information regarding course availability is currently reviewed on a six-monthly basis.<br />

Information about any additional courses which will become available for a first examination in the October<br />

examination session will be given in a Regulations supplement published in July each year, if applicable.<br />

1.5<br />

Applications for accreditation of prior learning or credit transfer may be accepted for the Postgraduate Laws<br />

programme subject to certain specifications listed in section 2 of the Detailed Regulations.<br />

1.6 (GR)<br />

It is a student’s responsibility to ensure that their choice of modules complies with the current regulations.<br />

1.7 (GR)<br />

Availability of modules may vary from year to year.<br />

1.8<br />

A student who has paid the fee for a particular module will be permitted to change their choice of module<br />

provided they have not attempted the examination for the module concerned. A change-of-module fee is<br />

payable. A maximum of four modules may be changed in this way. A student may be permitted to change<br />

more than four modules at the discretion of the University.<br />

Progression between the programmes of study<br />

For information about how to progress through the degree, see section 7 of the Detailed Regulations.<br />

1.9<br />

Students can progress from the Postgraduate Certificate to the Postgraduate Diploma <strong>and</strong> then onto the LLM;<br />

students can accumulate these awards as they progress.<br />
