Previous feasibility studies performed under TRP show that significant improvements of TWTs’ performances can be can be achieved by using cold cathodes. Recent advancements in cold cathodes capabilities coming from the commercial market of flat displays, give confidence that the technology is mature enough to be employed on microwaves tubes. Deliverables: Preliminary design, breadboard of the gun assembly and the design and breadboard of a cold cathode TWT. TRP Work Plan 2005-2007 Description of Activities TEC-SB/7935/dc 12/Feb/09 5.7.2 - Telecommunication P/L (Source: TRP 2000-2003) TRP Reference: Title: EEO-010 Technology for optical payloads The advantageous use of optical technologies offers the possibility of implementing new payload architectures operating at very high bandwidths, and a technology shift similar to the transition from microwave inter-satellite links to optical ones. The mass, volume and power requirements can significantly be reduced by applying advanced optical techniques and devices, including fiber, integrated and bulk optics. Breadboarding of selected technologies shall be performed. The study is complementary to TRP activity 94/2.1.6.5.
