2.1.7 Daimler
In August, 2009, Daimler had not confirmed reports that it may develop a new
generation Smart ForFour with the French automaker Renault. The last ForFour
was based on the Mitsubishi Colt and was produced at the Renault NedCar plant
in Born, Netherlands. Due to low sales, Daimler stopped building the ForFour in
2006 after only two years of production.[35]
2.1.8 Fiat
Fiat Group will stop making cars at its Termini Imerese plant in Sicily, Italy in
2011.[36]
Chrysler Group has announced it will retool its Toluca production plant in Mexico
to start production of the compact Fiat 500 in December, 2010. The company
plans to produce 130,000 vehicles in 2011, half of which will be sold as Fiat
models in the US. The rest will be produced for the Latin American market,
particularly Brazil.[37]
2.1.9 Ford
In November, 2008, Ford Motor’s Michigan Truck plant in Wayne, MI ended
production of the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. In late March, 2009, the
SUVs began production at the Kentucky Truck plant in Louisville, KY.[38;39] In
spring, 2009, Ford halted production of the Mercury Sable sedan and the Ford
Taurus X (crossover) at its Chicago, IL assembly plant.[40;41]
Ford announced that the Ford Explorer Sport Trac pickup and Mercury
Mountaineer SUV will be discontinued in 2010 when the Explorer, currently
produced at the Louisville, KY plant will be moved to Ford’s Chicago plant in late
2010. The Louisville plant will be retooled to build small cars for Ford.[42] In late
2011, Ford plans to start assembly of the next generation of the Kuga crossover
vehicle in Louisville, KY. Production would include US as well as European-
model Kugas for export. The Kuga crossover is currently manufactured in
Germany for sale in Europe.[43]
Ford began building the Ford Fiesta in late April, 2010 in Cuautitlan, Mexico. The
plant had been down since the end of 2008 for changeover.[44] As reported
previously in the Automotive Coatings section, a contact at Ford Motor Company
confirms that this plant utilizes Ford’s 3-Wet paint technology.[6]
As was also reported in the Automotive Coatings section, Ford Motor Company
began using Henkel’s Bonderite ® TecTalis coating as an alternative to zinc
phosphate at their Twin Cities manufacturing plant in St. Paul, MN in 2008.[13]
2.1.10 General Motors (GM)
GM’s expected sale of Saturn to Penske Automotive Group was canceled on
September 30, 2009. Within 24 hours, GM built the last Outlook crossover, Aura
sedan, and Vue small crossover at its Lansing Delta plant in Delta Township, MI,
