Suppliers’ Involvement <strong>in</strong> New Product Development 247<br />

Choos<strong>in</strong>g a transaction dyad <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Japan</strong>ese auto <strong>in</strong>dustry, we attempt to relate the<br />

architectural attributes <strong>of</strong> auto parts <strong>and</strong> the patterns <strong>of</strong> supplier’s <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong><br />

new product development process. The high functional modularity <strong>of</strong> auto parts<br />

which means the <strong>in</strong>terfaces <strong>of</strong> auto parts’ functional parameters are well def<strong>in</strong>ed,<br />

is shown to have positive relationship with the draw<strong>in</strong>g-approved system, while<br />

the low functional modularity <strong>of</strong> auto parts tends to make the auto maker to claim<br />

the ownership <strong>of</strong> detailed design draw<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> auto parts even when supplier has<br />

high level design capability. We arrive at the conclusion that balance should be<br />

secured between provid<strong>in</strong>g a high-powered <strong>in</strong>centive to a supplier, clearly def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

responsibility <strong>and</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g costs, <strong>and</strong> the match<strong>in</strong>g between architectural<br />

attributes <strong>and</strong> the division <strong>of</strong> labor should be emphasized dur<strong>in</strong>g the decision mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> design outsourc<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The priority <strong>of</strong> functional consideration <strong>in</strong> the supply cha<strong>in</strong> management <strong>in</strong> the<br />

<strong>Japan</strong>ese auto maker is also a conspicuous contrast with the practices by European<br />

<strong>and</strong> American companies. Hav<strong>in</strong>g emerged much earlier <strong>and</strong> developed <strong>in</strong>to a systematic<br />

practice, the delivery <strong>of</strong> functional modules with good design quality <strong>and</strong><br />

cost efficiency <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Japan</strong>ese auto <strong>in</strong>dustry cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be improved by <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

advanced <strong>in</strong>tegration technology <strong>and</strong> by optimiz<strong>in</strong>g the size <strong>of</strong> module. This<br />

function oriented th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Japan</strong>ese auto maker is consistent with its stance<br />

to construct a w<strong>in</strong>-w<strong>in</strong> relationship with suppliers <strong>and</strong> can be said as one source <strong>of</strong><br />

its competitiveness <strong>in</strong> the global automobile <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
