The three most important motives (mean over 3.4) are (1) the adaptation <strong>of</strong><br />

products to local requirements, regulations, <strong>in</strong>gredients etc., (2) to get access to<br />

skilled researchers <strong>and</strong> talent <strong>and</strong> (3) to learn from foreign lead markets or lead<br />

customers. Of medium importance (mean between 3 <strong>and</strong> 3.3) for the <strong>in</strong>ternationalization<br />

<strong>of</strong> R&D is (1) to take advantage <strong>of</strong> technology developed by foreign<br />

companies, (2) to keep abreast <strong>of</strong> foreign technologies, (3) to support nondomestic<br />

production, <strong>and</strong> (4) to comply with local market access regulations or<br />

pressures. The two least important reasons (mean lower than 3.0) are (1) to take<br />

advantage <strong>of</strong> foreign public R&D programs <strong>and</strong> (2) the <strong>in</strong>appropriate environment<br />
