– Financing of multilateral DC: While Germany is <strong>the</strong> world’s third<br />

largest contributor to <strong>the</strong> general UN budget, its engagement in UN<br />

development work is modest compared with that of o<strong>the</strong>r countries.<br />

For instance, since 1990 Germany’s annual contribution to UNDP has<br />

declined in nominal terms from EUR 70 to 26 million. This certainly<br />

has not recommended Germany for its wish to have a permanent seat<br />

in <strong>the</strong> UN Security Council (Fues 2005; Herfkens 2005).<br />

– Awareness-raising for <strong>the</strong> MDGs at home: DC is a task that is in need<br />

of support by <strong>the</strong> population of donor countries. One means of reaching<br />

this objective is awareness campaigns in <strong>the</strong> media. This is also<br />

true for <strong>the</strong> MDGs, <strong>the</strong> central goals of international development<br />

policy. However, only 13 % of all German citizens have even heard<br />

of <strong>the</strong> MDGs. In Sweden <strong>the</strong> corresponding figure is nearly one third,<br />

while <strong>the</strong> figure for France is no higher than 4 % (see Figure 29).<br />
