3.5 Improving maternal health (MDG5)<br />

Nearly all MENA countries are well on <strong>the</strong>ir way towards reaching MDG5<br />

(ESCWA 2005). According to UNSD (2004), maternal mortality rates<br />

have declined substantially everywhere in <strong>the</strong> region since 1990: Qatar,<br />

Kuwait, Jordan, <strong>and</strong> Saudi Arabia have already implemented MDG5 (see<br />

Figure 11). Six o<strong>the</strong>r countries are very likely to reach <strong>the</strong> goal during <strong>the</strong><br />

coming ten years: Egypt, Oman, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, <strong>and</strong> Lebanon.<br />
