1. I have two friends, Ray and Rena. One has a very clear idea about the future, while/<br />

though the other is clueless 1 .<br />

2. Ray is very good at mathematics, whereas/although Rena is good at languages.<br />

3. Rena wants to spend the next six years getting her master’s degree in c<strong>on</strong>trast to/in<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trast Ray who <strong>on</strong>ly thinks as far as the next weekend.<br />

4. While/<strong>on</strong> the other hand Ray is a “people” pers<strong>on</strong>, Rena likes to be by herself.<br />

5. On the <strong>on</strong>e hand, Ray is very organized and neat. Whereas /<strong>on</strong> the other hand Rena<br />

is disorganized and drops her things everywhere.<br />

6. While/although Ray is not clear about what he wants to do now, he may have a<br />

better idea in a couple years.<br />

7. Rena didn’t study for her exams, but still/ however she managed to pass.<br />

8. Rena likes to do her work in advance. However/regardless of the fact Ray does his<br />

work at the last minute.<br />

9. Despite the fact that/in c<strong>on</strong>trast they have different study habits, they both are<br />

suceeding.<br />

Explanati<strong>on</strong>: Emphatic use of ‘do’<br />

The emphatic forms of a verb are often used to give greater emphasis to the idea<br />

expressed by the verb. The auxiliaries do, does and did are used to give this additi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

emphasis in affirmative sentences (<strong>on</strong>ly in the present tense and the past tense) and in<br />

imperative sentences.<br />

e.g. You do look nice today! = You look nice today!<br />

Do come in. = Come in.<br />

8. Make the sentences emphatic.<br />

1. Paul has a new girl friend.<br />

2. My parents missed their flight.<br />

3. You got into serious trouble.<br />

4. Have another glass of water!<br />

5. You knew a lot about pets.<br />
