The pois<strong>on</strong>ing of the world’s land, air, and water is the fastest-spreading disease of<br />

civilizati<strong>on</strong>. It is potentially <strong>on</strong>e of history’s greatest dangers to human life <strong>on</strong> earth. If<br />

present trends c<strong>on</strong>tinue for the next several decades, our planet will become uninhabitable.<br />

Overpopulati<strong>on</strong>, polluti<strong>on</strong> and energy c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> have created such planet-wide<br />

problems as massive deforestati<strong>on</strong>, oz<strong>on</strong>e depleti<strong>on</strong>, acid rains and the global warming<br />

that is believed to be caused by the greenhouse effect. The seas are in danger. They are<br />

filled with pois<strong>on</strong>: industrial and nuclear waste, chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The<br />

Mediterranean is already nearly dead; the North Sea is following. The Aral Sea is <strong>on</strong> the<br />

brink of extincti<strong>on</strong> 1 . If nothing is d<strong>on</strong>e about it, <strong>on</strong>e day nothing will be able to live in the<br />

seas. Air polutti<strong>on</strong> is a very serious problem. In Cairo just breathing the air is life<br />

threatening- equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. The same holds true for<br />

Mexico City. Industrial enterprises emit t<strong>on</strong>s of harmful substances. These emissi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

have disastrous c<strong>on</strong>sequences for our planet. They are the main reas<strong>on</strong> for the greenhouse<br />

effect and acid rains. An even greater envir<strong>on</strong>mental threat is nuclear power stati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

People are beginning to realise that envir<strong>on</strong>mental problems are not somebody else’s.<br />

They join and support various internati<strong>on</strong>al organizati<strong>on</strong>s and green parties.<br />
