A declarative sentence can be reformulated in different ways depending <strong>on</strong> what<br />
piece of informati<strong>on</strong> is most important.<br />
e.g. David studied English at Oxford.<br />
It was David who studied English at Oxford.<br />
It was English that David studied at Oxford.<br />
It was at Oxford that David studied English.<br />
This kind of sentence is called a cleft sentence because the original sentence has<br />
been divided (or “cleft”) into two clauses. The pattern of cleft sentences is:<br />
It + to be + focus word + clause<br />
