6Why are these negotiations relevantto indigenous peoples?• It is vital that indigenouspeoples are able toparticipate effectively inthe current negotiations.This is to ensure that theirperspectives and proposalsare not only surfaced, butmore importantly, included inthe outcomes of the ongoingtalks beyond 2012.• In the Bangkok meeting in 2008, the convention has stated that itwould continue with CDM projects and other mitigation measures thathave impacted gravely on indigenous peoples’ rights to their landsand territories. There is a need to ensure that mechanisms are in placeto ensure that their rights are protected, and that these projects areundertaken with their FPIC, and benefits that are derived from suchprojects, are directly given to indigenous communities.• Negotiations on REDD are being fast-tracked towards a decision in 2009.Indigenous peoples need to engage in the discussions and negotiationsconsidering the potential impacts that REDD may have on their rightsto their forests. At the same time, this also presents opportunities toestablish spaces and mechanisms on indigenous peoples within theUNFCCC.• Indigenous peoples saw the need to further deepen their understandingon climate change and the negotiations, share their local adaptationand mitigation measures, and to identify strategies - and an indigenouspeoples’ roadmap to Copenhagen and beyond - to ensure thatindigenous peoples’ rights and development are considered by theUNFCCC. In 2008-2009, indigenous peoples organized several regionalsummits on climate change leading to the Indigenous Peoples’ GlobalSummit on Climate Change in 2009.In May 2008, the Asia focal person proposed that regions hold their ownprocesses to involve more indigenous peoples before the Global Summittakes place. The organizers for the regional summits were Tarcila RiveraZea of Chirapaq in Peru for the Latin America and Carribean Summit,Joseph Ole Simel of MPIDO in Kenya for the Africa Summit and VictoriaTauli-Corpuz of Tebtebba in the Philippines for the Asia Summit. 12138 <strong>Guide</strong> on Climate Change and Indigenous Peoples

The summit was attended by around400 indigenous participants from the different regions of the world.
