Continuation of Prophethood according <strong>to</strong> Ahādīth 285for the same reason that the building of mosques<strong>to</strong>day does not offend against the status of theProphet’s mosque as the Last Mosque. 280This is the irrefutable logic of the Ahmadiyya Muslim argumentwhich Farhan Khan has tried <strong>to</strong> dis<strong>to</strong>rt.Refuting Farhan Khan’s ArgumentIn order <strong>to</strong> refute Farhan Khan’s argument, let us firstunderstand the word ‏”اخر“‏ ٓ (ākhir). This word can be used inrespect of time, area, and status, i.e. it can mean last in terms oftime, or last in terms of area, or last in terms of status. As a result,there can only be three possibilities for the translation of theHoly Prophet’s words in the hadīth under discussion, that is, heis the last of the prophets in respect of time, or area, or status.The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamā‘at categorically rejects thenotion that the Holy Prophet sa could be the last prophet inrespect of time because this would naturally cause us <strong>to</strong> rejectthe coming of the Latter Day prophet fore<strong>to</strong>ld by the HolyProphet sa himself. The Holy Prophet sa could also not have beenthe last prophet in respect of area because it would not makesense. Hence, he can only be last in respect of status.This belief is reinforced when one sees the rest of thehadīth without any predisposition <strong>to</strong> the belief in the “end” ofprophethood. The complete statement of the Holy Prophet sa is:“I am the ākhir of the prophets, and my mosque is the ākhir ofthe mosques.” The only logical conclusion is that the HolyProphet sa is using the word ākhir here in respect of status.
