َُ30 With Love to Muhammad sa the Khātam-un-Nabiyyīnthe verse is studied in its proper context of praise in rebuttal toinsults, and in view of other verses of the Holy Qur’ān whichpromise the coming of prophets, the meaning of Last of theprophets simply cannot be applied to the phrase Khātam-an-Nabiyyīn, and the only possibility is to take the literal meaningof the one who attests to the truth of the prophets.Fourth, an objection to the non-Ahmadī understanding isthat the word khātim is Ism Fā‘il and if the meaning of last is tobe taken, then the literal translation of khātim would be the onewho ends or the one who finishes. This meaning cannot be appliedto the phrase Khātim-an-Nabiyyīn because the Holy Prophet sa isdefinitely not someone who has the authority to “finish” theprophets. This authority rests entirely with Allāh as He is theOne who can finish the prophets, not the Holy ProphetMuhammad sa .Fifth, it must be remembered that in Ibn Al-Anbārī, KitābAl-Masāhif, there is a narration that ‘Abd-ur-Rahmān Aslamī rastates:aااaاُ‎رءaوaاحن aابنaابaابؓ‏تaا ُ‎رءُ‏ aاحنَ‏ابّنaبتحaاتاءaوaااللهaا ‏َّبّنaبرaاتاءaالaaارءْ‏ اaوaخاتَمَ‏ااaخاتِمa َ ُaَ ّ َa رَّ‏ ب‏ْ‏ aق۔ُ و‏ّ‏ِI was appointed to teach Hazrat Imām Hassan ra andImām Hussain ra the Holy Qur’ān. Then, once, Hazrat‘Alī bin Abī Tālib ra passed by me [and] I was teachingthem to read Khātim-an-Nabiyyīn, with the kasra ontā’. Then, he [Hazrat ‘Alī ra ] said to me: “Teach themto recite wa Khātam-an-Nabiyyīn, with the fatah on tā’.May Allāh enable you to!”
