Finally the Working Group identifies specific research needs on the phenomenon ofdriver distraction itself as well as on assessment methods which help to quantifycontributing factors and the overall effect on driving performance. Standardization ofscientifically well founded and understood methods is an important contribution toharmonization by making the evaluation of different system designs comparable.IntroductionFollowing the publication of the European Statement of Principles for in-vehicleinformation and communication systems, responses from the Member States concerningapplication of the Principles have been studied by the eSafety Working Group 55 on HMI(Chapter 1).On this basis Chapter 2 analysis the situation concerning HMI and defines specific focusareas. One addresses the increasing availability of “nomad devices” and, to a lesser extentafter-market systems, which gives particular cause for concern as their lack of integrationwithin the vehicle may cause additional driver workload. Another important issue is dueto the fact, that multiple Stakeholders contribute to delivering information services.Chapter 2 also discusses scientific evidence on the safety impact of HMI and thepotential and limitations of HMI evaluation.Chapter 3 explains the tool/framework which is used in order to structure these currentHMI issues and relates them to the European Statement of Principles. The basis is athree-dimensional Matrix, called “HMI Solution Matrix”, which consists of thedimensions “HMI-aspect”, “system type” and “stakeholder”.In Chapter 4 the HMI Solution Matrix is completed resulting in specific proposals forthe amendment of the current ESoP.On this basis the goals and recommendations for a revised ESoP are derived in Chapter5 and compared to similar efforts in the United States and Japan.Chapter 6 provides, in addition, specific recommendations for specific focus areas:• Nomadic devices• Service Providers• Fleet Operators and Employers• Authorities• ResearchFinally Chapter 7 summarizes the recommendations on a revised ESoP as well as onaccompanying measures like driver information, ESoP dissemination and enforcement ofspecific aspects structured by stakeholder.55 Annex A describes the composition of the eSafety Working Group (WG) on HMI (Human Machine Interaction).Page 277 of 490
