LBS (Location-Based Services):Services that depend on knowing the user's location to deliver user-specific information, such as real-time traffic updates or point-of-interest dataLDW (Lane Departure Warning system):According to an analysis undertaken by the Volkswagen accident research unit, 18percent of all accidents are attributable to drivers veering off the road. Volkswagenaccident research has now come up with a system to counteract this phenomenon, whichis already close to reaching series maturity. This assistance feature can identify a vehicle’sposition in relation to lane boundary markings by way of cameras integrated into thevehicle. If the vehicle should deviate too strongly from its ideal course of travel, thesystem will send out a warning to the driver before he potentially goes off the road.MAGIC (Mobile Automotive Geographic Information Core):An industry consortium established to develop and promote an open industryspecification for delivering navigation, telematics and related geographic informationservices across multiple networks, platforms, and devicesMap matching:A technique to enhance and correct in-vehicle dead reckoning. Computer softwarefollows the progress of the vehicle through an on-board digital map and matches thedead reckoned estimate of the current position to the closest point on the map in orderto correct for accumulated sensor errors.MID (Moulded Interconnect Device):A mould-injected shell with the electric circuits integrated into the structure.MOST Cooperation:Cooperation between car manufacturers and OEM suppliers to develop a low cost, highbandwidth solution for data and multimedia in-vehicle applicationsObstacle & Collision WarningSystem detects obstacles and gives warning when collision is imminent. Current solutionswith limited performance are a separate feature of Adaptive Cruise Control systems, which use information obtained from radar sensors to give visual and acoustic warnings.Future systems wil use long/near range radar sensors or LIDAR and video imageprocessing.Obstacle Detection:Vehicle systems that senses an obstacle in the planned path. Feedback-control loop toprocess sensors determines whether avoidance is necessary.Page 484 of 490
