6.2 <strong>eSafety</strong> Glossary112:The Pan-European emergency call number3GPP:The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a collaboration agreement that wasestablished in December 1998. The collaboration agreement brings together a numberof telecommunications standards bodies, which are known as “Organisational Partners”.The current Organisational Partners are ARIB, CCSA, ETSI, ATIS, TTA, and TTC.ABS (Anti-lock Braking System):Originally developed for aircraft braking systems, uses computer-controlled valves tolimit the pressure delivered to each slave cylinder. If a wheel locks up, steering inputcannot affect the car's direction. With ABS, no matter how hard the pedal is pressed,each wheel is prevented from locking up and skidding is prevented. Since ABS pumpsthe brakes, a driver can apply constant pressure on the brake pedal and concentrate onsteering the car. This allows the driver to regain control during inclement weather orquickly avoid a collision. ABS is available for nearly all new cars and trucks and isstandard equipment on many.ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control):Cruise control system that uses sensors to automatically maintain a safe distance from thevehicle ahead, adapting to speed changes, etcAdaptive Brake LightsTriggered by the strengths of brake activation the rear brake lights are iluminated indifferent kinds to indicate emergency braking manoeuvres to the following vehicles.Adaptive Head LightsThe system consists of electromechanical controlled headlights to ensure optimumillumination of the lane in bends. The headlight is directed into the bend as soon as thevehicle begins cornering.
