Implementation Issues for Adaptive Head LightsASystem descriptionAdaptive Head Lights improve night-time driving safety on twisty roads: the headlampsfollow the direction in which the driver is steering, thus extending the illumination rangein the relevant areas. In this way it is possible to spot pedestrians, cyclists and animalsmuch sooner.Conventional headlamps have a range of about 30 metres when entering a corner with a190-metre centre-line radius. With the Active Light System however, this is extended by afurther 25 metres. The Active Light System is based on bi-xenon headlamps withdynamic range adjustment. A microprocessor integrated in the vehicle's electronic datanetwork controls the system on the basis of real-time information supplied by thesteering angle and speed sensors. Other possible functions include bending lights.BTechnology AvailabilityAvailable as an option in several European models.CRoad and Information Infrastructure Need and AvailabilitynoneDOrganisation requirementsnoneERegulatory Requirements / BarriersLiability problems need to be solved..FBusiness Case / Customer Awareness and AcceptanceGKey Success FactorsCustomer awareness and willingness to bear additional cost, liability.HFeasible Deployment StrategiesPage 388 of 490
