5. Assessment of safety impactsIndividual members of the Working Group collected information about the safety impacts of ITSsystems from various sources. Information of the safety impacts of eSafety systems was gatheredfrom literature by VTT. In addition, DEKRA and ADAC produced some assessments of theimpacts of eSafety systems on the basis of German accident causation data and Swedishresearchers also produced such an overview on the basis of Swedish accident causation data. Theresults of these overviews are presented in Annex 1.Furthermore, a data analysis of the European CARE accident data base was initiated to identifythe accident patterns also on the European level, in addition to the afore-mentioned data fromGermany and Sweden.A comprehensive overview of the safety impacts of eSafety systems is expected to be producedby 2007 as a result of the European Commission’s 6 th Framework R&D Programme. In order to facilitate more qualified assessments of the safety potential of eSafety systems, theEuropean data bases for accidents have to be improved according to the recommendation of theAccident Causation Data Working Group.6. Priority systemsAfter a ranking based on safety impacts, availability and possible market deployment, theWorking Group selected a number of systems as priority systems. The priority systems aresystems, which are expected to be able to reduce road fatalities in Europe already in the shortandmedium-term. The priority systems are the following:Vehicle-based systems- ESP (Electronic Stability Programme)- Blind spot monitoring- Adaptive head lights- Obstacle and collision warning- Lane departure warningInfrastructure-related / based systems- eCall- Extended environmental information / Extended Floating Car Data- RTTI (Real Time Traffic and Travel Information)- Dynamic traffic management (VMS)- Local danger warning- Speed AlertA summary of the expected safety benefits of the priority systems according to research results isgiven in Table 4.Page 345 of 490
