As already mentioned, specific issues arose after the ESoP had been developed, whichconcern nomadic devices, running text (RDS-TMC) provided by services like radiostations and the integration of multiple systems especially during retro-fit. While thecurrent ESoP in general applies to these cases, it does not contain specific principles onsystem integration. Furthermore, many systems on the market show that the ESoP isoften not fully respected. On the other hand, principles on HMI must not impedeinnovation and should allow sufficient room for brand differentiation. Under suchbalanced circumstances the relevant stakeholders can be expected to continue to strivefor the best HMI solution and to engage and invest in research on Human MachineInteraction.3. Solutions Analysis ToolIt was found both convenient and useful to represent and analyse the HMI safety issuesidentified above within a three-dimensional matrix (figure 2). The first dimension isgiven by the system type (“systems”), because different problems were identified fornomadic systems, aftermarket systems and OEM installed systems. The second dimension is given by the HMI aspect, since e.g. the responsibilities forinstallation, information presentation, design of interaction and use vary depending onthe type of system. Finally, the stakeholders are seen as the third dimension because their responsibility andcontribution again depends on system type as well as on the specific HMI aspect.Figure 2: Idea of the 3D- Matrix on HMI as basis for identifying solutionsOn the basis of this 3D-Matrix the distribution of responsibility and of potentialcontribution to the solution of issues can be discussed box by box. In the matrix the “R”identifies where specific stakeholders do have (or should have) responsibility for ensuringsafety.Page 289 of 490
