Accident Causation DataRecommendation number and title:1) Consolidate analyses from existing EU, Member State and industry road accident data.2) Develop jointly a European Accident Causation Database covering all EU countries, and facilitate access to it.Activity leader:European CommissionStart of activities:1) 20042) 2006Background:Although today there are different sources of accident statistics from the MemberStates, no single consolidated accident causation database exists. In the US, the NHTSAspends approximately $28 million annually on accident data. The European Unionspends considerably less, often in a fragmented way. Europe can, within two years, useexisting data sources to obtain a much clearer understanding of accident causation thanexists today. The aim is to:- Establish a European network for accident analysis;- Provide input for the European Road Safety Observatory;- Provide a more scientific basis for the identification and evaluation of effective safetyfunctions;- Enable the confirmation of the relevant best tests and test procedures for safety, performance, and ease of use;- Enable the evaluation of effective countermeasures.Status:Information on national and international data has been disseminated to the differenteSafety Working Groups. However, the comparison of data is difficult and several of theWGs are investigating how to best make use of this data. The WG on ImplementationRoad Maps has compiled some of the results in order to list technologies according tothe impact on road safety in Europe. The Final Report and Recommendations of theImplementation Road Maps WG is available on www.escope.infoPage 62 of 490
