A few EmX stations were also built in the median of Franklin Boulevardwith a “center island” design common to most rail systems. ThePittsburg/Bay Point BART station has a center island between thetracks. This design saves considerable space compared to conventional“right hand only” stops, and also reduced capital expenses somewhat.Figure 4.4 shows a center island EmX station, along with the uniqueconcrete guide way design that tends to discourage automobiles fromdriving on the bus way. The station platform is on the left side of thiseastbound vehicle, and it is also on the left side of westbound vehicles,on the right of the photo.Currently, EmX operations over the “single lane” segments arecontrolled by a custom-designed signal system, similar to that used byrail systems on single-track stretches. Currently, no fares are chargedon EmX, partly as an introductory marketing incentive but also due tothe small size of the operation, with a maximum four EmX vehicles inservice during weekdays and two evenings and weekends.Figure 4.5 illustrates the low floor, level boarding used by EmX and anumber of other BRT projects.Figure 4.5 EmX Vehicle Low Floor Level BoardingLas Vegas Metropolitan Express (MAX)This 7.5 mile, $20.3 million BRT route began operation in June 2004along North Las Vegas Boulevard North between the DowntownTransportation Center in downtown Las Vegas, North Las Vegas andNellis Air Force Base. Of the 7.5-mile route length, 4.5 miles are insurface lanes dedicated to MAX buses. There are 22 stations, 11 ineach direction.66
