esult, some exciting topics were not covered here, including silicon-basednanostructures, magnetic nanocrystals, and nanocrystals in biology. Canham’sdiscovery of efficient light emission from porous silicon in 1990 hasgenerated a widespread research effort on silicon nanostructures (includingthat on silicon nanocrystals). This effort represents a very large field thatcould not be comprehensively reviewed within the scope of this book. Thesame reasoning applies to magnetic nanostructures and, specifically, tomagnetic nanocrystals. This area has been strongly stimulated by the needsof the magnetic storage industry. It has grown tremendously over the pastseveral years and probably warrants a separate book project. The connectionof nanocrystals to biology is relatively new, however, it already shows greatpromise. Semiconductor and metal nanoparticles have been successfullyapplied to tagging biomolecules. On the other hand, biotemplates have beenused for the assembly of nanoparticles into complex, multiscale structures.Along these lines, a very interesting topic is bio-inspired assemblies of nanoparticlesthat efficiently mimic various biofunctions (e.g., light harvesting andphotosynthesis). ‘‘Nanocrystals in Biology’’ may represent a fascinating topicfor some future review by a group of experts in biology, chemistry, andphysics.I would like to thank all contributors to this book for finding time intheir busy schedules to put together their review chapters. I gratefullyacknowledge M. A. Petruska and Jennifer A. Hollingsworth for help inediting this book. I would like to thank my wife, Tatiana, for her patience, tireless support, and encouragement during my research career and specificallyduring the work on this book.Victor I.
