ehavior. Emission from the lowest band-edge state, jN m j = 2, is opticallyforbidden in the electric dipole approximation. Relaxation of the electron–hole pair into this state, referred to as the dark exciton, can explain the longradiative lifetimes observed in CdSe quantum dots (QDs). Because two unitsof angular momentum are required to return to the ground state from thejN m j = 2 sublevel, this transition is one-photon forbidden. However, lessefficient, phonon-assisted transitions can occur, explaining the stronger LOphonon coupling of the emitting state. In addition, polarization effectsobserved in luminescence [89] can be rationalized by relaxation from the1 L sublevel to the dark exciton [84].F. Evidence for the Exciton Fine StructureAs we mentioned earlier, PLE spectra from high-quality samples oftenexhibit additional structure within the lowest electron–hole pair state. Forexample, in Fig. 4b, a narrow feature (a), its phonon replica (aV), and abroader feature (h) are observed. Although these data alone are not sufficientto prove the origin of these features, a careful analysis of a larger dataset hasshown that they arise due to the exciton fine structure [11]. The analysisconcludes that the spectra in Fig. 4b are consistent with the absorption andemission line shapes shown in Fig. 15. In this case, the emitting state isassigned to the dark exciton (jN m j = 2), the narrow absorption feature (a) isassigned to the 1 L sublevel, and the broader feature (h) is assigned to a combinationof the 1 U and the 0 U sublevels. Because it is optically passive, the 0 Lsublevel remains unassigned.This assignment is strongly supported by size-dependent studies.Figure 16 shows PLE and FLN data for a larger sample (f4.4-nm effectiveradius). Whereas in Fig. 4b, three band-edge states are resolved [a narrowemitting state, a narrow absorbing state (a), and a broad absorbing state(h)], in Fig. 16, four-band edge states are present: [a narrow emitting stateand three narrow absorbing states (a, h 1 , and h 2 )], Consequently, h 1 and h 2can be assigned to the individual 1 U and 0 U sublevels. To be more quantitative,a whole series of sizes can be examined (see Fig. 17) to extract theexperimental positions of the band-edge absorption and emission featuresas a function of size. In Fig. 18b, the positions of the absorbing (filled circlesand squares) and emitting (open circles) features are plotted relative to thenarrow absorption line, a (1 L ). For larger samples, both the positions of h 1and h 2 (pluses) and their weighted average (squares) are shown. Figure 17dshows the size dependence of the relative oscillator strengths of the opticallyallowed transitions. The strength of the upper states (1 U and 0 U ) iscombined because these states are not individually resolved in all of thedata.
