Figure 20Energy level diagram for nanocrystal–PPV bilayer LEDs.injection into the device. Because the band offsets generally favor holetransfer from PPV to CdSe, as opposed to electron transfer from CdSe toPPV, the electroluminescence spectrum is dominated by the nanocrystals atlow drive voltages. At higher biases however, electrons can tunnel from thenanocrystal layer into the PPV layer and emission from both componentscan be observed. As mentioned earlier, the surface treatment of the nanocrystals isimportant in determining the efficiency of LED operation. Reducing theelectronic interaction between nanocrystals and their surroundings is beneficialbecause it both removes nonradiative decay pathways and reduces therate of charge separation at the nanocrystal–polymer interface. This can beachieved by overcoating CdSe nanocrystals with high-gap materials such asZnS or CdS, which is known to increase the photoluminescence efficiency. However, in the case of ZnS overlayers, coating the CdSe nanocrystals isfound to decrease the nanocrystal electroluminescence efficiency. Althoughthe ZnS layer passivates the nanocrystal surface and reduces nonradiativedecay, it simultaneously introduces a larger barrier to charge injection andexciton formation [18]. On the other hand, CdSe cores capped with CdS layersexhibit both enhanced photoluminescence and enhanced electroluminescenceefficiencies (external quantum efficiencies of up to 0.22%) [3]. This is partlybecause the CdSe core of a CdSe/CdS nanocrystal is still electronicallyaccessible because there is a smaller conduction-band offset at the CdSe/CdS interface compared to the CdSe/ZnS interface [3,123].The performance of nanocrystal LEDs is also sensitive to many of theinjection and transport factors discussed in Section V. Thus, low-workfunctionmetals such as A1 and Mg are commonly used to facilitate electroninjection into the CdSe layers. In addition, nanocrystal-based LEDs can showCopyright 2004 by Marcel Dekker, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
