Working in confined spacesThe definition of the term "confined space" used in this context is characterised by several specialfeatures: Access to confined spaces is often only possible using special equipment or a lack of oxygen or an accumulation of noxious or explosive gases or the temperature is higher or lower than under normal circumstances or in some circumstances residue of hazardous substances can be found in the "confined area" or storage tanks, silos, reaction vessels, pipes, drainage pipes etc. or unventilated spaces depending on the circumstances of the work to be carried out or boiler stanchions, see Sec. 5.7.1.Safety extra low voltage must be used for electrical work in confined spaces.All confined spaces must be clearly marked so that unauthorised people may not go in them. Workingin confined spaces is associated with special risks for any member of staff.One week before work starts the relevant subcontractor must submit the risk analysis/ work instructionsin order to obtain the relevant work permit.Possible risk factors are, for example, asphyxiation by toxic gases, fumes or lack of oxygen, sediments,slippery or bulky material, various fixtures, risk of explosion, electrical voltages, radiation,cleaning agents etc.The work permit is only valid for the duration of one work shift and must be renewed by the shiftsupervisors. The permit must be affixed next to the entrance to the room together with a list of thepeople working there.A rescue <strong>plan</strong> relating to the specific case must be drawn up before work starts and rescue equipmentis necessary.Before work starts and while the work is going on the atmosphere in "confined spaces" must bechecked for oxygen content and any poisonous gases.Should anybody go into a confined space a flagman must be posted at the entrance to the dangerarea. The subcontractor must ensure that it is always possible for the person in the confined spaceand the flagman to communicate with each other. The flagman must not do anything else that coulddivert his attention from the person involved.All employees must be extensively trained for working in "confined spaces".
