Muzilll, Instituto Agronomico do Parana, Londrina, Parana,BrazilAbstractIn <strong>the</strong> semitropical areas ofBrazil. <strong>the</strong> increase and stabilization ofwheatproduction are restricted by such environmental factors as irregular rainfall.frost. soil acidity. low fertility and disease. associated with improper soilmanagement. Some progress has been obtained by Brazilian research efforts forfinding alternatives to minimize <strong>the</strong>se enVironmental constraints. Alternativesinclude cropping practices and <strong>the</strong> use of varieties tolerant to soil acidity,combined with soil tillage methods and appropriate use offertilizers.231Under Brazilian semitropical conditions(Figure I), <strong>the</strong> increase and stabilizationof wheat production is mainly affectedby climatic conditions and diseases.O<strong>the</strong>r factors are improper soilmanagement. which promotes erosionand obstructs root development. andnatural soil constraints such as acidityand low fertility.The breeding programs in Brazil haveachieved great genetic progress inobtaining varieties better adapted to itsenvironmental conditions.
