Clauses that are introduced by wenn suggest a wish and can often stand alone without a
main clause. The conjunction can be omitted from the sentence and presumed to be understood.
In that case, the conjugated verb begins the sentence. For example:
Wenn wir nur mehr Geld hätten!
Hätten wir nur mehr Geld!
Wenn er nicht so jung gestorben wäre!
Wäre er nicht so jung gestorben!
Wenn ich sie doch nicht verlassen hätte!
Hätte ich sie doch nicht verlassen!
If only we had more money!
If he hadn’t died so young!
If only I hadn’t left her!
Notice that the words doch and nur are often added to these sentences for emphasis.
