Varsity Football The

Varsity Football The Varsity Football team got off to a slow start this year because it had to train a new quarterback, Greg Tirpak. As he got stronger, so did the team. Their record improved from 0-2 to 6-2. The success of the last six games of the season was due to the fine running of the backs, Vinnie Venezia, co-captain Dave Flail, Dave Ring, Jeff Tirpak and Dwight Giles, the fine blocking of the Linemen, and, of course, the fine coaching of Messrs. Shello, Kern, Anderson, and Head Coach Graham. The other factor that made this year’s team a success was that each member was able to play two or three different positions offensively and defensively. This ability added depth to a twenty-man squad. This year’s team also placed 5 players on the All- League B Team of the Prep Schools: Co-captains Bruce Lackland and Dave Hill, Irv Greene, Brian Culp, and Jeff Tirpak. "I am extremely proud of the accomplishments that the team has made this year,” said Coach Graham. The tradition of being proud of the team is a long one at Wardlaw. Over the years, the gridiron has provided a constant experience for many young men, a way to relate to the once and future graduates of the school. And, of course, the many winning seasons attest to quality of that bond between young men. y S c h e d u le RAMS OPPONENTS 6 St. James 28 13 Pennington 14 14 Newark Academy 8 32 Morristown Beard 6 30 Princeton Day School 0 33 St. Pius 8 28 Montclair Kimberley 0 9 Pingry 0 j i 176

Bruce Lackland has played Varsity football for the past four years and has started every game. In addition, he has been named to the all-League and all-State teams for the last three years. As an offensive and defensive tackle he performed so well that he received the award for best offensive lineman. According to Coach Graham, "Bruce is able to play at least forty-eight minutes per game and has been cited as a mainstay of his team.” Quiet and tough and recognized as a true team leader, he was named co-captain for the 1982 season. Bruce Lackland II David Hall A spectacular and effective defensive player, David has played Varsity football for four years. Despite many injuries this year he had 50 tackles, 6 quarterback sacks, one interception, a recovery of 2 fumbles, ran 193 yards and carried the ball 21 times in a 6 game season. David gets along with all of the players and helped to inspire his teammates. "He is a good team leader,” said Coach Phil Graham, and "he was elected co-captain by the team members.” His skill and ability have earned him the selection to the all-area "B” league defensive back and All-State. He was an outstanding all around player and the Wardlaw-Hartridge football team will miss him next year. One of the leading players on the Wardlaw- Hartridge football team is Dave Ring an offensive halfback, and, this year, a defensive noseguard. He has been a great asset to the team this year because of his speed and agility. It is because of those qualities that coach Phil Graham promoted him to the position of noseguard this season. During this extremely short six game season, Dave carried the ball 16 times for a total of 46 yards, had 26 tackles and a fumble recovery. Dave has done a remarkable job this season.
