Varsity Field Hockey

Varsity Field Hockey Teamwork was the trademark for this year’s field hockey team, the result of many years of interaction and experience among the varsity players. With many members sporting four-year varsity records, and led by co-captains Maria Wilson and Jill Kenny dedication to the team ran high. From pre-season drudgery through the mid-season slump, the team always "continues to fight on” as one player aptly stated, and finally bounded back to produce a winning season with victories against public schools like South Brunswick and Monroe, as well as a tie score against longtime rival Kent Place. The Rams ultimately took the Division B Championship for 1982, after which they took their coach and co-captains into the showers. Looking back, "We peaked at just the right time,” commented Wilson. High Scorer was Ria Wilson, with 23 goals, and forward Julie "Cas” Casagrande led in season assists. Strong defensive support was provided by Jill Kenny, Karen Robinson, and Kim Perkins. First year varsity goalie Ellen Bart finished the season with 5 shutouts and strong performances during penalty flicks. Team members honored with All-State titles include both cocaptains Wilson and Kenny, Casagrande, Perkins, Robinson, and Bart. Since most of the starting lineup will graduate this spring, W-H can look forward to seeing many new faces on varsity next fail. The quiet player on this year’s Varsity Field Flockey Team, would have to be Masako Shimamura. Although quiet she was very aggressive. She always seemed to appear at the right place at the right time to set up good defensive plays. "Masako has played left full back on the team for the past two years, and has done a masterful job of it, according to Coach Kern. For all of her hard work this year, Masako was awarded the Outstanding Defensive Player trophy. A four year veteran of the Varsity Field Hockey team is Karen Robinson. She not only has been a good defensive player for all of those years but has added a lot of laughter to the team. She will always be remembered as one of its characters. For the past two years Karen has played Center Middle so well that she has made the All State Team in the B division of the Independent Schools both years. To quote Coach Donna Kern, "Karen was a really tough defensive player.” Karen Robinson Although this is Ellen Bart’s first year on Varsity Field Hockey, she has done a tremendous job as goalie. With 5 shut out games this season, she also stopped 3 penalty strokes during the second _ round of the state tournament. A very dedicated player, she never missed a pre-season practice and was a regular at the season practices. For her dedication and hard work this year she received the Coach’s Award, and Coach Kern’s citation "Ellen has done a fine job this year.” ELLEN BART 181
