delivery.

Procedure after birth: Intensive medical treatment

of both twins is required. The recipient

shows polycythemia and the donor twin anemia

(difference in hemoglobin concentration of more

than 5 g%). Ultrasound of the fetal skull at the

early neonatal stage is advisable to detect prenatal

infarction or periventricular leukomalacia.

Prognosis: There is a high mortality rate of

50–90% in severe cases. Intrauterine death of

one or both twins may occur. Complications

arise due to premature birth. If intrauterine

death of one twin occurs, the surviving twin has

a high risk of neurological morbidity.
