Excessively thin or wasted infants and children<br />

will require interventions as described in dietary<br />

section of this table.<br />

Several classification systems <strong>for</strong> describing poor growth<br />

and malnutrition have been developed. These have not been<br />

developed <strong>for</strong> VLBW infants <strong>with</strong> growth that is compromised<br />

<strong>with</strong> illness. However, these classifications may be useful in some<br />

clinical settings:<br />

Mild malnutrition - weight between 80-89% of expected weight<br />

<strong>for</strong> length or height<br />

Moderate malnutrition – weight between 70-79% of expected<br />

weight <strong>for</strong> length or height<br />

Severe malnutrition - weight
