Recommend supplemental vitamins A, E, and K,<br />

as appropriate.<br />

Compare all current measurements to reference data <strong>for</strong><br />

chronological age and to previous measurements.<br />

Biochemical<br />

The following are yearly labs <strong>for</strong> patients <strong>with</strong> CF ordered by<br />

the CF center following the patient: 4<br />

Liver function tests, hemoglobin<br />

A1C, glucose tolerance <strong>with</strong>in<br />

are normal limits.<br />

• complete blood count <strong>with</strong> differential<br />

• serum vitamin A<br />

• serum vitamin E<br />

• serum vitamin D<br />

• liver function tests<br />

• casual glucose (random)<br />

• oral glucose tolerance test (>10 years of age)<br />

Adjust recommendations <strong>for</strong> other nutrients, as<br />

appropriate.<br />

• urinalysis<br />

Fecal fat, prothrombin time,<br />

albumin levels are <strong>with</strong>in normal<br />

limits. Bone mineralization and<br />

glucose tolerance are normal.<br />

Adjust recommendations <strong>for</strong> nutrient intake (fat,<br />

fat-soluble vitamins, protein, calcium, etc.), as<br />

indicated by labs.<br />

Other labs, which may be ordered based on clinical<br />

symptoms:<br />

• 72-hour fecal fat test<br />

• Fecal elastase (on all newborns) <strong>with</strong> positive CF<br />

newborn screens<br />

• prothrombin time<br />

• albumin<br />

• bone mineralization status<br />
