Mac Pháidín Student - Mary Immaculate College, Limerick POST-PRIMARY EDUCATION ON IRELAND’S ISLANDS - CONTEXT AND BACKGROUND The study of islands is called ‘Nissology’ (Baldacchino, 2006; Gill, 2017; Mac Pháidín, 2018; McCall, 1994, 1996), but Irish nissologists are scarce, as very little research has been published on the islands of Ireland or their schools (Oireachtas Éireann, 2018). This article explores opportunities for postprimary education on the islands of Ireland, including overcoming specific contextual challenges facing island communities. The Islanders are committed to ensuring the future Gairmscoil Mhic Dhiarmada, Árainn Mhór, Donegal of their islands, including the Irish speaking islands, and this is exemplified by their necessity to secure the future of their island schools. Proactive planning by island schools is imperative, particularly with the significant and continuous drop in the population of Ireland’s islands and the corresponding pressure on schools (GRETB, 2020; CSO, 2017). Despite the steady downward trend in the population of the islands https://www.chg. gov.ie/gaeltacht/islands/populated-offshore-islands/, the provision of post-primary education on the islands of Ireland is a positive, contemporary development, including the establishment of four of the five post-primary island schools since 1985, under the patronage and management of Education and Training Boards (ETBs), i.e. Galway and Roscommon ETB (GRETB) and Donegal ETB (DETB), (GRETB, 2017; Mc Hugh, 2017; Oireachtas Éireann, 2018). These are progressive schools with committed and enthusiastic management and staff (GRETB, 2017; Mc Hugh, 2017; Oireachtas Éireann, 2018), but they have operated for many years without PAGE 125
