Games 283

tween 2 and 4 balls in each pocket. The object of the game

is to clear these balls off the table. The first player chooses

one pocket in front of him and distributes the balls from

it among the successive pockets to the right of the one chosen,

putting one ball in each pocket. He may put the balls in the

rum a or in neighboring pockets beyond it, if necessary.

The fundamental rule is that the last ball may not go into

an empty pocket.

A ball must be put in the ruma or corner pocket if that is

the last one. But the corner pockets may not be emptied.

As the game goes on it will happen that a player cannot

play, because the last ball in everyone of his pockets would

have to be played into an empty pocket. The player then

receives a penalty ball, which is put in F.

If a player receives 12 penalty balls he loses. Any player

who empties all the pockets on his side wins, however many

penalty balls (under 12) he may have.

9. THE NAVAL BATTLE. This is a game for two players

in command of opposing fleets. Neither knows the exact

location of his opponent's ships, but by firing successive salvos,

of whose effect he is kept informed, each tries to determine

where each of his opponent's ships lies. The first to

"destroy" these ships wins.

The field of battle is the set of cells in a 9 X 9 square

marked off on graph paper. For purposes of reference the

cells may be identified by the co-ordinates of their centers.

Each player marks off two such squares. On one he

records the positions of his own ships and the location of his

opponent's shots. On the other he records his own shots.

The ships are rectangles of cells, and their locations may be

indicated by shading the cells of the battlefield occupied by

them. Each fleet consists of 1 battleship (1 cell wide by 4

cells long), two cruisers (each 1 X 3), 3 destroyers (each

1 X 2), and 4 submarines (each 1 Xl).
