FIGURE 170. The Wolf and the Goats.

3. THE WOLF AND THE GOATS. This game is played on

an ordinary chessboard. The 12 goats are white pawns

placed on the black cells of White's first three rows, and they

move like men in checkers, but without being able to take

an opposing piece. The wolf is a black king placed on the

black queen's knight's square. The wolf moves like a king

in checkers, and may take the goats. The wolf tries to reach

the opposite side of the board, and the goats try to prevent

him by hemming him in on all sides. By keeping together

the goats can always win.
