draw. In case of tie the one with the highest single number

wins (for example, 6-4 beats 5-5). When the winner of the

draw has been determined, the pieces are returned, the whole

set is reshuffled, and each of the players draws seven pieces

at random, which he sets up before him so that he and not

his opponent can see them. The dominoes not drawn are

called the stock.

The winner of the draw, A, now places one of his dominoes

face up between himself and his opponent. If his opponent

B possesses a domino one of whose ends matches an end of

the domino played by A, he places such a domino face up on

the table with the other so that the two are end to end, with

the matching ends together. If B cannot play, A plays again.

If B cannot play again, A plays a third time, and so on until

B has played or A also can play no farther (which is impossible

on the first play). When B has played A has the opportunity.

The play continues-thus until one of the players has

exhausted his hand, or neither can play farther. When play

has ceased, the player with fewer total points in his hand

wins by the amount of the difference of the totals in the two

hands.

Here are some of the commoner variations in the fundamental

game. (1) A doublet mayor must be placed crosswise

instead of end to end. (2) If doublets are permitted or

required to be placed crosswise, play may be permitted from

the ends as well as the sides. (3) A player who is unable to

play may be required to draw one from the stock. If he cannot

play after the draw, the other player may play. (4) A

player who cannot play may be required to draw one at

a time from the stock until he either can play or has exhausted

the stock. (5) The range of the dominoes may

be greater, say to 9-9 or 12-12, and the number drawn

originally may be changed correspondingly.
